Introduction

What you eat after your juice cleanse helps determine how you feel in the week that follows. The last juice has been consumed, and pizza delivery is only a click away. This is exactly where the reintroduction days begin, and they are just as much a part of the cleanse as the juices themselves.

In this article, you will learn how to gently break your fast and what to eat day by day. We will also show you what the scale really says afterward and what you can take with you into your daily routine.

Why you can trust us

  • We have been producing juice cleanses for years and support people through their fasting and reintroduction days every day.
  • Every article is checked against the recommendations of professional societies and current studies; all sources are listed at the end.
  • We will also tell you what a cleanse cannot achieve, especially regarding weight loss.

What do you eat after a juice cleanse? The short answer

Eat slowly and something easily digestible, and increase the amount over several days. Fasting ends with a small meal such as an apple or a vegetable soup. This is followed by reintroduction days with steamed vegetables, potatoes, oatmeal, and gradually more whole grains and legumes.

The number of reintroduction days depends on the length of the cleanse. The Ärztegesellschaft Heilfasten und Ernährung (ÄGHE) recommends three reintroduction days for a classic fast lasting six to eight days. For a three-day juice cleanse, less is usually sufficient.

Which duration is right for you can be found in our article Juice Cleanse 3, 5, or 7 days.

Reintroduction in the package

The BESSERE SAFTKUR PLUS includes a reintroduction program with supplements that accompanies the first four days after the cleanse.

It does not replace light eating; it provides a solid structure for the reintroduction days.

How do you break your fast after a juice cleanse?

Your stomach has adjusted

After a few days of juices, your digestive system has adapted to liquid nourishment. Your stomach is used to smaller portions; solid food and high amounts of fiber have been absent for days. If a large, fatty meal follows now, an unpleasant feeling of fullness often ensues. Many mistakenly conclude that the fasting did not do them any good.

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) describes the classic breaking of the fast with a raw or cooked apple, which is eaten slowly. For dinner, there is potato soup. With the BESSERE SAFTKUR PLUS over three days, the plan includes Kombucha twice on the last day of the cleanse. This means the cleanse ends with a fermented drink before the first bite is taken the next morning.

The first bite

Chew every bite until it is almost liquid, and put down your cutlery in between. After the cleanse, you will notice much sooner that you are full. Stop before the plate is empty.

What the scale really shows

The scale usually shows less after the cleanse, and that is exactly what tempts one to draw false conclusions. During the first few days of fasting, the body depletes its glycogen stores in the liver and muscles, and water is attached to every gram of it (Swiss Journal of Nutritional Medicine, 2022). As soon as you eat again, these stores refill along with the water. Therefore, some of the weight returns in the first few days after the juice cleanse, and that is normal.

A review from 2024 shows how much the daily routine afterward matters. In one study, adults with a normal weight lost about six percent after five days of water fasting and had regained the weight entirely after three months. In studies where participants ate consciously less afterward, the rebound was only one to two percent (Ezpeleta et al., 2024). This concerned fasting without juice, but the principle applies here as well. The effect of a cleanse depends on the time afterward.

One habit instead of ten

After the juice cleanse, you will have a better understanding of when you are eating out of habit and when you are hungry. This observation is the most valuable thing you will take away from the cleanse.

  • On the last day of the cleanse, write down three things you noticed, such as reaching for sweets in the afternoon.
  • Choose one of them and change only that one habit in the weeks that follow.
  • Maintain a rhythm with fixed meals instead of constant snacking, just like during the cleanse.

The transition days, day by day

Fiber returns slowly

Juices provide almost no fiber because it remains in the pulp during pressing. Therefore, your digestive tract must first get used to solid food with more fiber again. A small 2025 study found shifts in the oral and gut flora after three days of a juice-only diet. The researchers attribute this to a high sugar intake and a lack of fiber (US study, 2025). This is a hint, not a proven finding. Nevertheless, it makes sense to reintroduce fiber gently but consciously after the cleanse.

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) specifies a clear increase for building back up after fasting. On the first day, it is about 800 kilocalories, on the second 1,000, on the third 1,200, and on the fourth 1,600. This plan applies to longer fasting with water and tea. With a short juice cleanse, you can increase a bit faster, but the principle remains the same.

Good to know

According to nutritional information, one cleanse day of the BESSERE SAFTKUR PLUS contains 731 to 885 kilocalories. The first transition day according to the DGE plan is therefore about the same. The difference mainly lies in the fact that you are chewing again and digesting solid food.

Your three-day plan

  • Day one with apple, vegetable soup, steamed vegetables, and potatoes, plus plenty of water and herbal tea.
  • Day two with oats, some natural yogurt or plant-based yogurt, more vegetables, and initial whole-grain side dishes.
  • Day three with small amounts of legumes, nuts, and oils, then slowly back to your normal diet.

If you are looking for variety, you can find three simple smoothies for these days in our article on transition days after a juice cleanse. The BESSERE SAFTKUR PLUS includes a transition program with supplements for the first four days after the cleanse. It does not replace meals; it provides the transition days with a fixed structure.

When to return to coffee, sports, and daily routine

Coffee, alcohol, and training

Coffee and alcohol are avoided during the cleanse. If you reintroduce them all on the first day, you lose exactly the distance the cleanse gave you. Start with one cup of coffee and see how you tolerate it. It is best to avoid alcohol completely during the transition days. The same applies to sports as to food. A walk on the first day is good; postpone hard sessions for a few days.

Also, listen to your body. Mild flatulence or a sluggish bowel in the first few days of the transition are possible and usually pass. Severe abdominal pain or symptoms lasting several days should be checked by a doctor. Our article Juice cleanse, who is it suitable for and who is it not helps clarify if a cleanse is right for you.

What returns when

First transition day, then water, tea, and light meals

Second transition day, then a cup of coffee if you like

Last transition day completed, then back to normal training

Alcohol only when you are eating completely normally again

“Alcohol only when you are eating completely normally again” - David J Kugler

Conclusion

The transition days are not an appendix, but the part that decides what remains from the cleanse. Break the fast with a small meal, increase the amount over a few days, and give your gut time for the fiber. The scale shows mostly water after the juice cleanse; the real gain is your perspective on your habits. Those who think about the transition while starting find it easier, as our article on juice cleanse preparation shows. Our article does a juice cleanse really work puts into context what a cleanse can actually achieve.

Remember, the transition is part of the cleanse

Eat slowly and in small portions after the juice cleanse

Plan the transition days before you start

Take one new habit with you, not ten

FAQ: what to eat after the juice cleanse

What should you eat on the first day after the juice cleanse?

It is best to have something light like an apple in the morning, vegetable soup at lunch, and steamed vegetables with potatoes in the evening. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly.

How many transition days do I need after the juice cleanse?

After three cleanse days, one to two transition days are usually enough; after seven cleanse days, more like two to three. For classic therapeutic fasting of six to eight days, three transition days are standard.

Why do I gain weight again after the cleanse?

In the first few days, your glycogen stores replenish, and water comes back with them. This is normal and not a step backward.

When can I drink coffee again?

From the second transition day on, there is little to object to having a cup. Start with a small amount and see how it sits with you.

Why do I have flatulence after the cleanse?

Your gut has to get used to fiber again. Therefore, increase whole grains and legumes slowly. If symptoms persist for days, have them checked by a doctor.

What should I avoid during the transition days?

Alcohol, fatty and highly processed foods, lots of sugar, and large portions. They strain your digestion, which is currently readjusting.
