10 STEPS TO IMPROVED SKIN
Your skin is your largest organ and forms your personal barrier and “keeps your body together” but regulates your temperature, blocks external irritants, gives you the ability to feel, and so much more.
1. Go sweat
Exercise is the key to a healthy body - sure, but did you know it’s also the key to healthy skin? Here’s why:
When we exercise our heart pumps more blood around the body – meaning your skin is getting a better supply of oxygen and nutrients. At the same time the increased blood flow flushes your skin from toxins, resulting in less skin damage. Intense sweating opens your pores, which eliminates clogged sebum and impurities. But even better: regular exercise lowers your stress hormones and can reduce stress-related skin conditions, and as it boosts your immune system it counters inflammation and results in clearer skin.
2. Drink more water
Did you know that more than 50% of the human body is made of water? The skin as the largest organ even consists of more than 60% of water. But your body also loses a lot of water every day, making it necessary that you continuously replenish your reservoirs for your body to function properly.
If your skin is dehydrated it gets dry, flaky, and wrinkly and if this condition persists, premature aging and even infected and breaking skin can be the result. Though water requirements vary by individual, between 2-4 liters should be consumed.
The color of your pee will tell you – a light yellow color is just the thing to aim for, dark yellow pee indicates a need for water and watery, white pee means you need to slow down a notch.
3. Use SPF
Finding the right balance of sunlight exposure is a tricky issue, and here is why: UV rays (UVB to be precise) are responsible for the development of vitamin D - which is essential for human health. But too much UV light (UVA & UVB) negatively impacts your skin (we all had sunburn before) but in the worst-case it can damage your skin’s DNA and lead to cancer and photoaging.
So, use your sunblock daily and be aware that some UV rays are always around: in winter, in the shade and they can even penetrate windows.
4. Avoid sugar
Artificial or “refined” sugars really impact your skin badly. Not only does it damage your skin’s elastin and collagen which accelerates aging and increases skin stiffness (were talking wrinkles here). But also, acne and inflammation are directly linked to artificial sugar intake. If you have a sweet tooth but struggle with skin impurities, rather indulge on fruit (e.g., blueberries: rich in antioxidants + they counter skin aging) and leave out the chocolate bars.
5. Eat your greens
Leafy greens are the BEST. They are the ultimate source of protein, essential multivitamins, and minerals as well as antioxidants. They are also a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids (= an essential fatty acid that is crucial for maintaining human health but cannot be made by the body itself) and chlorophyll, which enhances the oxygen transportation in your body. 6. Feed your gut

7. Sleep enough and well

Poor sleep can also lead to increased levels of cortisol which causes the skin to increase sebum production, leading to clogged up pores and inflammation.
8. Cut the bullshit
Many cosmetic products contain all sorts of artificial chemicals to make them more durable or give them certain effects. But unfortunately, they also come with bad and unwanted side-effects:
